‘Throughout the last two weeks, Rowan has engaged with the young people exceedingly well. Building relationships Rowan has demonstrated perfectly. For example, he has used his style of working to adapt to the young people’s learning need by being creative and using his initiative consistently. Drawing and writing acrostic poems, using templates has been a good tool to engage young people in the topic. Rowan used his positive enthusiastic attitude and examples of his own poetry to demonstrate and encourage participation.
The “What makes me, me?” exercise young people thoroughly enjoyed taking part. This was because they found it useful to reflect on themselves and identify their positive characteristics. Furthermore, a particular young person usually finds it difficult to engage in sessions. Rowan engaged him in the activity well by encouraging him to voice his own opinions about himself using reflective examples of Rowans own poetry.
Young people enjoyed the sessions to a degree that they would value more weeks of having poetry with Rowan further to a good working relationship that has now been established.’ Kirsty Brown – Youth Worker, Westside Young People’s Centre
‘Rowan James ran a poetry workshop for participants at Total Arts with overwhelming results. Every participants was engaged with poetry, tasks where accessible and enjoyable. The structure of the workshop meant that everyone felt at ease when undertaking the task of penning a poem. Rowan added another level to his work by performing ‘spoken word’ poetry which was wonderful to watch. It was a pleasure to be part of this workshop and I very much feel that it left our participants with a new found love and confidence when it comes to be literacy and poetry.’ Gavin – Total Arts, Cambridge Junction
‘Rowan provided a work shop of exceptional quality, catering for the needs of all in the group. We were astonished at the quality of the poems produced and the participants were immersed in the process. Rowan gave the children the opportunity to express themselves through a medium that many hadn’t experienced before but it is something we will certainly look to in the future. In all, it was a fantastic workshop!’ Katie Black – Total Arts, Cambridge Junction
